Rehabilitation

The two hostels, one for girls and one for boys functioned well over the year in temporary premises. Plans were finalised for the permanent buildings but work was delayed firstly due to Communal Riots and then Government collapsed. It was only in 2003, plans for the Girls Hostel were accepted by Government.
In the town of Adipur, land was bought to start a hostel for girls. Tin sheds were constructed for a temporary but safe hostel until a permanent building was constructed. There were many difficulties in the beginning such as drinking water and transportation to the schools. The construction of girl’s hostel was beset with problems, especially delays in getting necessary clearances due to administrative procedures which are often not clear, as well as the cost of cement and steel escalated by over 50 %. However due to timely help from donors, the construction was completed in the beginning of 2005. The new building was opened up on 14th January 2005 in presence of donors from Taiwan and Korea.
It had been hoped to manage the running costs of the hostels on grants from the Gujarat State Government after the first year. However the State Government has now changed its policy and no longer gives grants to new hostels. This means that we are in urgent need of funds to run the hostels. As a result of that we could not continue the Boys Hostel, however the Girls hostel is functioning with the help of Local Donors and other organisations.
