About

India is no stranger to calamities and discrimination, but the Gujarat earthquake that took place on
26th January 2001 was by the worst for many years. Thousands of town and villages have been
devastated, possibly 30,000.00 people killed and the lives million of others wretchedly
uprooted.

In response to earthquake that took place in Gujarat in 2001,Jambudvipa, along with its local partner organization, Bahujan Hitay Gujarat started two hostel for boys and girls from poor and Backward Classes affected by the earthquake. The poorest children invariably dropout in education due to poverty and such calamities make the situation even more adverse. In addition to this area is socially and educationally backward especially for girls.

In the town of Adipur, land was bought to start a hostel for girls. Tin shed were constructed for a temporary but safe

hostel until a permanent building was constructed. There were many difficulties in the beginning such as drinking water and transportation to the schools.

The construction of girls hostel was beset with problems, especially delays in getting necessary clearances due to administrative procedures which are often not clear. However due to timely help from donors, the construction was completed in the beginning of 2005. The new building was opened up on 14th January 2005 in presence of donors from Taiwan and South Korea.
